The cardinal couple is spending quite a bit of time together.

We've had a few cardinals around all winter. This week, this cute couple have been paying more attention to each other. In the top photo she is looking at him adoringly. The bottom photo shows 'mate feeding' or 'courtship feeding.'

This sapsucker seems to be thriving, but we're getting tired of the cold and snow. Can't wait for the night heron and oriole to return, but we have a few months to go.
If it weren't for scrabble and RumChata, we'd go crazy.

Female Northern Cardinal

The male cardinal has been a frequent visitor, so we stopped photographing him. Today the female was less shy and posed for a few pictures.

The new sony a580 and the birds coming to the deck are producing much higher quality photos than a few years back. We'll have to get out more.

We went to Connecticut for Easter but left the birdcam on to see who was at the bird feeder. We had observed the courtship feeding in cardinals, but this is the first time we noticed it in house finches.

The latest snow storm seems particularly difficult for the birds. We've had many more at the feeders. The cardinals that are usually too skittish to come to our deck for food joined the finches and the juncos for some nyjer seed.

Although no one eats the cranberries, one adds some color to the Junco picture. The red bellied woodpecker and male cardinal bring their own color.

Finally, we got a photo of something other than cormorant on a stick.

Of course, we also got a few more of our best friend.

We went for a walk this morning and when we got to a clearing, Chris paused to soak up some sun, a rarity of late. We walked a little further and came across a like-minded turkey. Later in the day, we got a nice picture of a cardinal at the platform feeder, saw a tufted titmouse also eating a seed taken from the platform feeder, and saw our robin fledglings demanding to be fed from their parents.

The Pine Siskin is supposed to be here only for the winter. Their range is extending and they may stay. I hope they let the goldfinches have a turn at the thistle feeder.

 

One female and two male cardinals have been frequenting this feeder. There appears to be quite a competition for her attention by the males.
