Bathing Beauties: Chickadee, Nuthatch, Titmouse
On Saturday we had more than the usual number of birds visiting our backyard water feature. They are so entertaining, and it really delights us. However, we promise to leave our backyard when the fall migration picks up, so hopefully we'll have more varied photographs to entertain our blog visitors. We've been meaning to go to Cape May, Brigantine, the Meadowlands, maybe even Dauphin Island, so check back soon to see what we encounter.

Summer Backyard Birds in New Jersey
One very hot day, we caught this robin taking a bath in our waterfall.
The nuthatches have been very active on the tree trunks but rarely are found on the ground.
We've had quite a few chickadees. They also enjoy the waterfall, but they have also been coming to the tree closest to our deck.

A visit to Rutgers Gardens
Here are some bird photos we took at Rutgers Gardens off Ryders Lane on Rutgers Cook Campus. There were more flowers than birds this morning, but we are always happy to see a waxwing.

White-breasted Nuthatch Hiding a Seed
The Stokes Field Guide to Birds says this about the Nuthatch. "Nuthatches are best known for their habit of storing food in bark crevices and their ability to move head first down trees enabling them to find food that "right-side up" birds like Woodpeckers might miss." That's exactly what we caught him doing in these pictures.

Nuthatch
The white-breasted nutcatches were common visitors last winter but we didn't see any this spring. A few have just returned to the area.
