We took a short vacation to Cape Cod. We mainly enjoyed the beaches and some nightlife, but went birding at Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary. It's a nice place but our schedule didn't permit us to be there during the best birding times.

Kingbirds

We often see a solitary kingbird in our yard, but we've never observed a family group until today. When we took the boat out this morning, there were 2 adults feeding a juvenile kingbird. Here are some photos of these birds.

Eastern Kingbird

It seems that eastern kingbirds have plenty of insects to eat this year.
Eastern Kingbird,

A few times, we've noticed the kingbird chasing the heron, much like other birds chase hawks or crows. It dives at it and hits it on the back. Here's one blurry photo of a chase. We also like it because if you enlarge it by clicking on it, you can see a bit of the red on the kingbirds head that is rarely visible. Perhaps he was angry.

More Birds

Robin
We read that the Robin turns its head not to listen for worms but to look for them.

Goldfinch
The male goldfinches are a bright yellow this time of year. The females aren't nearly as colorful.

Goose
A Canada Goose sitting on her nest. We've seen some goslings the past few days, but they aren't plentiful yet.

Red Bellied Woodpecker
We usually post profiles of the Red Bellied Woodpecker, but here he's showing off his red belly. They are very awkward on flat surfaces

Eastern Kingbird

Eastern Kingbird

The Eastern Kingbird is a type of flycatcher. He is hard to photograph because he is always darting about.
